Cocktails, puns, and Jane Austen trivia combine in this modern drink cookbook
Disclaimer: I received this book as a birthday present from my sister. I received no compensation for this review. Please enjoy responsibly.
Last spring, I was wandering Barnes and Noble as a break from my weekend grading. I always enjoy pursuing the shelves and discovering new books. While I enjoy the public library and saving money, I also enjoy buying new books to add to my collection. On that cool April day, however, I was not looking to buy more books ahead of our upcoming move. Instead, I took several pictures of books and added the titles to my extensive Goodreads “Want to Read” list.
This summer, one of my sisters surprised me for my birthday and purchased two books from my list! One book was today’s review, Gin Austen: 50 Cocktails to Celebrate the Novels of Jane Austen. (The other book will appear on a future Monday book review - stayed tuned!)
The author, Colleen Mullaney, is a New York author who loves mixology books and Jane Austen. Through her writing, you can tell that she enjoys her content. The drink making and other bar knowledge is helpful, such as explaining the differences between types of strainers and glassware.
The book is organized by Jane Austen novel, with a short introduction for each novel before moving into the drinks. Some treats are new creations, while others are classics with a Jane Austen name. There are also quotes from the novels about drinking and parties interspersed throughout the pages. The end of the book provides fun Jane Austen themed drinking games for a Jane Austen themed party.
While COVID protocols and restrictions may limit the grand balls and gathering of friends for now, Gin Austen is a delightful quick read to get you in the party spirit and learn a few things along the way.
